Setting up a discovered attack: check + capture
In this lesson we see the forcing moves checks and captures combined. The combination involves a sacrifice. After the preparatory sacrifice, a discovered attack or discovered check yields material gains.
What do you have to do?
Set up a discovered attack by sacrificing a piece with a check and capture. Then win material by performing a discovered attack or discovered check.
With the rook on d2, the bishop on e2 and the black queen on h2, all the ingredients are present for a discovered attack. The bishop has yet to find a target. The rook on c8 and the knight on f7 can be attacked, but the problem is that when removing the bishop, the rook on d2 is unprotected. With 1.Qxf7+! white finds a nice solution. Black has to capture the queen (1...Kxf7), after which white does successfully move the bishop: 2.Bc4+. Thanks to the check, Black does not get time to capture the rook on d2 with the queen. Black has to cancel the check, after which white captures the queen with 3.Rxh2. White has won a piece.
